Lorena Luciano and Filippo Piscopo, both originally from Italy, met in law school before moving to New York City to pursue their true calling in storytelling.

 

Over the years, they built a filmmaking partnership that evolved into

an award-winning body of documentary films, television projects,

and branded content with global reach and lasting impact.

Filippo Piscopo won an Emmy Award for directing and producing It Will Be Chaos (HBO) and served as director of photography on the Oscar-nominated The ABC’s of Book Banning (MTV).

 

A Canon Fellow and professor of documentary filmmaking and cinematography, his work is grounded in a close, empathic approach to storytelling, using the camera to unfold intimate, character-driven narratives while bringing nuance to complex social issues.

Supported by the Sundance Institute and the International Documentary Association,​ ​his films have screened at major international festivals including Venice, TIFF, DOC NYC, ​and Thessaloniki, ​a​nd ha​v​e been recognized with Best Documentary, Best Director, Human Rights, and Audience Awards.

Working across directing, producing, and cinematography,

he develops films that balance visual precision

with emotional depth, often in long-standing collaboration

with his partner, director Lorena Luciano.

Emmy Award–winning filmmaker Lorena Luciano is a fellow of the Sundance Institute, the MacArthur Foundation, and the International Documentary Association (IDA), and an Artist-in-Residence alumna of the Jacob Burns Film Center.

Lorena crafts intimate, cinematic investigations into power and moral reckoning through vérité filmmaking,

immersive interviews, and archival material. She builds deep trust within diverse communities, from refugee survivors and overlooked coal towns to environmental activists and subversive artists,

drawing on her legal background to bring rigor, accuracy, and fairness to her storytelling.

Her films have received Best Directing and Best Documentary honors, and have screened at major international festivals including Venice, TIFF, DOC NYC, Thessaloniki, and Seattle, among others.

 

Alongside her directing work, Lorena contributes as an editor to socially urgent films.

She has served as a jury president and jury member at international film festivals and industry awards,

reflecting her standing within the global documentary community.

 

She lives in NYC with her husband and film partner, Filippo Piscopo, and together they are parents of two college-age sons, bringing the same quiet dedication to family life as to their creative work.
